The Silver Fox is the water course at Doral, and it is not subtle about it. Water comes into play on 16 of 18 holes. The marble-white sand bunkers are deep and strategically placed. The bermuda rough is heavy. If the Blue Monster is the course with the history, the Silver Fox is the one that quietly beats up golfers who underestimate it.
The History
Robert von Hagge and Bruce Devlin designed the Silver Fox, opening it in 1986 as one of the later additions to the Doral course portfolio. Von Hagge and Devlin were among the most prolific design partners of the late 20th century, responsible for courses across the country that combined dramatic visual presentation with genuine playing challenge. At Doral, they had flat South Florida terrain and the same water table that defines the rest of the property to work with, and they committed to it fully. Sixteen holes with water in play is not a coincidence; it’s a design philosophy.
The course carries a rating of 74.9 and a slope of 148 from the tips, numbers that reflect a course playing harder than its 7,006-yard par-71 length suggests. The bermuda rough that lines the fairways rewards accurate tee shots and punishes anything that drifts off line, and the deep bunkers with their marble-white sand are positioned to collect both the tentative approach shot and the aggressive one that misses short.
The Golf
The Silver Fox plays as the second-most challenging course at Doral after the Blue Monster, and in some ways it presents a harder test for the mid-handicapper because there’s less room to manage the water than on the Monster. The Blue Monster’s water tends to define the left or right side of holes clearly, allowing a deliberate miss away from the trouble. The Silver Fox puts water in positions where the conservative play and the aggressive play both carry risk, and it requires genuine decision-making on multiple holes rather than simply taking the safe side of the fairway.
Long flowing fairways with interesting undulation give the round a visual variety that the flat terrain doesn’t always suggest is possible, and the greens complex design gives strong putters a meaningful edge over the round. It’s the course in the Doral rotation that most rewards a second look once a player knows where the danger actually lives.
