Dye Fore at Casa de Campo

Dominican Republic

About This Golf Course

Golf architecture aficionados have long called Dye Fore the most underrated course in the Caribbean, and it’s hard to argue otherwise. While Teeth of the Dog gets all the headlines a mile down the road, Dye Fore offers something completely different: 27 holes of cliffside golf above the Chavón River, with elevation changes, canyon views, and two of the most dramatic par-3s you’ll play anywhere in the world.

The History

Pete Dye had already built three courses at Casa de Campo before ownership came back to him for one more. The result was Dye Fore, a 27-hole complex perched on a series of forested bluffs and cliffs high above the Chavón River, constructed on terrain that had barely been touched since the resort’s earliest days. The original 18 holes, the Marina and Chavon nines, opened in 2003 at what Golf Digest described as the end of Dye’s middle period, when he was still building large-format waste bunkers and greens with more pronounced movement. A third nine, Lagos, joined the layout in 2011. Lagos represents Dye’s later design sensibility, with smaller, more geometric bunkers and greens featuring the kind of subtle, micro-movement putting contours that became his late-career signature.

The three nines start and finish near Altos de Chavón, a meticulously constructed replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village sitting on the ridge above the river. It was built in the late 1970s using stones blasted from the hillside during road construction, and its cobblestone alleys, limestone walls, and hilltop restaurants frame the Dye Fore experience before and after the round in a way that nothing else at Casa de Campo quite replicates.

The Golf

Dye Fore plays as three very distinct nines, each with its own character. The Marina nine sweeps along the edge of the plateau above where the Chavón River meets the Caribbean Sea, with views out toward the island of Catalina on a clear day and several holes that drop sharply toward the river before climbing back. The Chavon nine turns inland and plays along the ridge directly above the gorge, with seven holes clinging to cliff edges that drop 300 feet to the river below. Two par-3s on the Chavon nine, the 12th and 15th, carry over deep ravines to greens cut precariously on the edge of the cliff, and they rank among the most visually stunning and technically demanding short holes in the Caribbean. The Lagos nine, the newest and least-known of the three, lives up to its name with water in play on five of its nine holes, and waste bunkers and rock-guarded greens that won’t let a player relax at any point.

For most visiting golfers, the Chavon and Marina combination makes for the most sought-after 18-hole pairing. But players who’ve been to Casa de Campo more than once consistently rotate through all three nines on return trips, and the Lagos adds a genuine fourth dimension to the property that rewards multiple visits.
