The Best of the Best: Myrtle Beach’s Top 5 Exemplify Everything That Makes Golf Great

The Top 25 Coastal Golfaway Myrtle Beach Golf Course Rankings provide helpful insight for those looking to plan a 2019 golf trip that includes the best courses in the area. Truly a remarkable group of facilities, our Top 5 represents not only the best Myrtle Beach has to offer, but also puts them in elite company among other prominent courses nationwide.

The Dunes Golf and Beach Club comes in at #1 on the list. The course, designed by legend Robert Trent Jones, ranked 34th in Golfweek’s 2019 list of resort courses and is continually praised as one of the best facilities in all of America. The 13th is the club’s signature hole. It has received recognition as one of the best golf holes in the country. A stunning par 5, it is nicknamed “Waterloo” for the lake that comes into play. Few courses in existence utilize natural terrain the way The Dunes Club does, and the result is beautifully magnificent.

Another preeminent facility on the Grand Strand, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, designed by the late, great Mike Strantz, also preserves the beauty of the course’s natural surroundings. The layout is highly creative, marked by large, undulating greens guarded by massive, strategically placed bunkers. Towering live oaks frame perfectly maintained fairways at this fantastic golf course. No doubt, a day at Caledonia will never be forgotten.

Crafted by internationally acclaimed designer Tom Fazio, Wachesaw Plantation Club takes advantage of the land’s sloping terrain with elevation changes that do not often occur naturally in the Lowcountry. Fairways subtly weave through a wooded landscape, leading to the par-5 18th, a hole that is truly memorable. One of the best and most dramatic finishes on the entire East Coast, the hole begins high atop a bluff overlooking the fairway and finishes in dramatic style at the banks of the Waccamaw River.

At Tidewater on the Grand Strand’s north end, something special awaits. With boats passing by on the Intracoastal Waterway and breathtaking views of expansive marshlands, the course and its surroundings quickly become the star of any round. Designed by architect Ken Tomlinson, the par-72 layout embraces the beauty of Myrtle Beach and features one of the most scenic par 3s around: the 12th hole, overlooking Cherry Grove, plays over a natural marsh to a green protected by bunkers and is aptly named “The Wishing Well.”

Finally, True Blue, another Strantz design that sits on a piece of land adjacent to Caledonia, wraps up our Top 5, and for very good reason. This links-style course is both traditional and contemporary, featuring wide-open fairways and ginormous greens that make it playable for golfers of all skill levels. The bunkering is expansive and creative, and in combination with the natural surroundings, presents a beautiful challenge that makes a lasting impression.
