The Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe

Williamsburg, VA

About This Golf Course

If you’re building a Williamsburg golf trip and only have time for one course outside of Kingsmill, this is the one. The Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe is the most decorated public-access layout in Virginia and one of the best in the country.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in September 1963, the Gold Course sits directly across from historic Colonial Williamsburg as part of the Colonial Williamsburg Resorts property. Jones called it his finest design — and after a career that spanned over 500 courses in 45 states and 35 countries, that’s not a throwaway line. Rees Jones renovated it in 1998 and again in 2016-17, rebuilding the bunkers, updating the turf, and carrying his father’s original vision forward without changing what made it special.

What the Course Plays Like

The Gold plays 6,817 yards as a par 71 with a slope of 144 and a rating of 73.8. It’s not about length — it’s about precision. Narrow, tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain demand placement off the tee, and the greens are protected by water and bunkering that punishes anything offline. The front 13 holes reward a methodical player. The closing stretch opens up a bit, but by then the course has already had its way with most scorecards.

What sets this course apart is the par 3s. All four require tee shots over water and they are collectively regarded as one of the best sets of one-shotters on any public course in America.

The 16th Hole: One of Golf’s Most Iconic Par 3s

The signature hole is the par-3 16th — one of the earliest island greens in American golf, predating TPC Sawgrass by nearly two decades. It plays 169 yards over a deep ravine to a shallow green ringed by small bunkers. There is no bailout. The 12th is right behind it — a peninsula green jutting out into the same pond on three sides, demanding a precise iron with water on nearly every miss. Two of the best par 3s in Virginia sit back-to-back in the same round.

Tournament History and Accolades

The Gold Course has hosted five USGA championships and the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s National Championship. Golf Magazine ranks it among America’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play and named it one of just four courses in the world that deliver a Masters-like experience. Golf Digest gives it 4.5 stars. No housing anywhere on the property — just golf, mature pines, and some of the best conditioning in the Mid-Atlantic.

What to Know Before You Go

The Gold fills up fast, especially in spring and fall. Book it first and plan the rest of your itinerary around it. It’s 15 minutes from Kingsmill, which makes a two-day Williamsburg trip built around these two stops — Gold Course one day, River Course the next — as good a back-to-back as you’ll find anywhere in Virginia.
